Small fireplace or Restricted Space?
We may be able to modify the fireplace opening, if there is scope to do so (see fireplaces). If not, you may be looking for a choice of the smallest log burners available. Or you might consider an inset stove (See stove choices page).
Will it fit?
Apart from looking right, and not squeezed-in, the opening will have to meet the manufacturer’s published minimum distances to both combustible and non-combustible surfaces.
Minimum distance to Combustibles
These distances are usually quoted in the stove manual for in-front, behind, to sides and rear of the stove. Wooden surrounds and mantels, floor boards and plasterboard are all combustible. These distances can sometimes be reduced by means of heat-shielding with fireproof board or a dedicated heat-shield for the stove.
Minimum distance to non-combustibles
This is about giving the stove sufficient space around it to both radiate its heat properly and to prevent the stove overheating, which may damage it. This minimum distance is seldom less than 2″ (50mm) to the sides or an inch (25mm) to the rear.
